Mizoram’s First Rajdhani Express: A New Rail Journey Begins

For the first time in history, Mizoram is getting a Rajdhani Express. This is a big step toward better transport and stronger connections between Northeast India and the rest of the country.

What’s So Special About This Train?

The Rajdhani Express is one of India’s most premium trains. It offers faster travel, better comfort, and top facilities. Until now, Mizoram was among the few states that didn’t have a Rajdhani service.

This new Rajdhani will run from Sairang, a town near the state capital Aizawl. It will travel all the way to New Delhi, passing through key cities like Silchar, Guwahati, and Malda. It will also offer connections to Kolkata and Agartala.

The total distance between Sairang and New Delhi is around 2,340 kilometers, and the journey will take about 35 hours.

The New Rail Line That Made It Possible

This big step was made possible thanks to the Bairabi–Sairang railway line. This is a 51-kilometer track that links Mizoram to the Indian railway network.

The rail line is almost ready. The final inspection and test runs are happening now. Once everything is safe and approved, the Prime Minister is expected to officially launch it—possibly by mid-July 2025.

This will make Sairang the main railway station for Mizoram’s capital, and the starting point of the Rajdhani Express.

Station Upgrades on the Way

CM Lalduhoma has also requested the central government to upgrade Sairang railway station. He wants it to have:

Clean and modern waiting areas
Internet and Wi-Fi facilities
Reservation counters for tickets
Parcel and goods handling services
Staff jobs given to local youth

He believes that a modern station will improve the travel experience and also help create jobs and business opportunities in the area.

How It Helps Mizoram’s Economy ?

This train is more than just a way to travel. It will boost Mizoram’s economy in many ways:

Tourism will grow, as more people can now easily visit Mizoram.
Trade and business will increase, as goods can be moved faster and cheaper.
Job opportunities will open, especially in transport, tourism, and logistics.
It will help local farmers, artisans, and small businesses reach new markets.

Mizoram is already being planned as a key part of India’s Act East Policy. This train, along with other projects like the Kaladan highway, will help connect Mizoram to Southeast Asia, including Myanmar and Thailand.

This new rail link also has a social impact. For many years, people in the Northeast have felt disconnected from the rest of India. With this Rajdhani train, students, workers, and families will find it easier to travel, settle, and succeed in other states.

When Will the Train Start?

There is no exact date yet, but the launch is expected very soon, likely before the end of July 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may lead the inauguration event.

Once the train starts running, the Indian Railways will release the ticket prices, schedule, and full route details.
