India celebrated its 79th Independence Day with a stirring address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the iconic Red Fort, marking his 12th consecutive speech from this historic location—a milestone that surpasses Dr. Manmohan singh’s record and places him third only to Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Independence Day celebrations began with solemn tributes, as the Prime Minister paid homage at Rajghat before heading to the Red Fort, where he was welcomed by top defence dignitaries. At 7:30 AM, he hoisted the national flag, followed by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute. As the Tricolour unfurled, he declared, “This great festival of freedom is a festival of 140 crore resolutions.”
A defining theme of Modi’s Independence Day address was Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance. He warned that dependence on other nations is “a recipe for disaster” and emphasized that self-reliance is not merely about trade balances or currency strength—it is about building capabilities, resilience, and sovereignty. He highlighted India’s achievements in agriculture, vaccine development, and digital infrastructure such as the CoWin platform as models of indigenous innovation.

The Prime Minister delivered a firm message on national security and cross-border threats during his Independence Day speech. Referring to the April Pahalgam terror attack, he revealed that the armed forces had been given complete freedom to plan and execute Operation Sindoor, striking deep into enemy territory and dismantling terrorist infrastructure.
In a significant diplomatic move, he announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it “one-sided” and unfair to India’s interests, stating, “Blood and water will not flow together.” He also warned that India would no longer bow to nuclear blackmail, declaring that the country’s “new normal” would not tolerate terrorism or nuclear coercion.
Modi highlighted India’s strides in clean energy during his Independence Day address, noting that the country had already met its 2030 clean-energy targets five years ahead of schedule. He spoke of the growing momentum in solar and hydropower development and revealed plans to increase nuclear energy capacity tenfold by 2047.
In a historic policy shift, he announced that the private sector will now be permitted to participate in nuclear energy projects, aligning this with the broader opening of strategic sectors such as space and defence manufacturing.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently completed an 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station. Building on this achievement, he declared that India is actively working to establish its own space station in the near future, signalling a major leap in the country’s space capabilities. This announcement became one of the most applauded moments of the Independence Day celebrations.
Modi unveiled upcoming GST reforms, expected to be rolled out by Diwali, which aim to reduce taxes on essential goods—what he described as a “Diwali gift” to the people. He also launched the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana, a ₹1 lakh crore initiative offering ₹15,000 to first-time private-sector job seekers, while providing incentives to companies to hire fresh graduates.
He stressed efforts to simplify governance, noting the repeal or reform of 280 outdated laws. Echoing his vision for Indian industry, he invoked the mantra “Daam kam, dam zyaada”—products that are affordable yet high in quality.
Encouraging the youth to lead in technological sovereignty, he called for the creation of indigenous social media platforms and the domestic development of jet engines for fighter aircraft—highlighting that this spirit of innovation must be nurtured long after this Independence Day.
Looking ahead, Modi outlined a vision for India in 2047, the centenary of its Independence Day. By then, he said, India should be a fully developed nation, powered by the energy of its youth and the resilience of its farmers. He stressed the importance of self-reliance in agriculture, from producing fertilizers domestically to adopting sustainable farming practices.
The Prime Minister saluted freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence and paid homage to the makers of the Indian Constitution, describing it as a guiding light for the nation. He also marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, acknowledging the contributions of leaders who shaped modern India. His remarks served as a reminder that Independence Day is not just a commemoration, but a call to action.
Modi celebrated India’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse, citing advancements in defence capabilities, energy independence, critical mineral exploration, and space technology. He reaffirmed that these achievements are central to the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and to enhancing India’s standing on the world stage—an ambition that was strongly reinforced during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 79th Independence Day speech was a potent mix of security resolve, strategic vision, and developmental ambition. With themes of self-reliance, technological sovereignty, assertive diplomacy, and inclusive growth, the address not only tackled present challenges but also charted a roadmap for India’s transformation as it marches toward the historic milestone of 2047.
