Rahul Gandhi Asks: Why Can’t PM Modi Call Trump a Liar on Ceasefire Claim?
New Delhi, July 30, 2025 – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again launched a direct political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this time over a controversial remark made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump recently claimed that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the presence of PM Modi — a statement that has triggered a new political firestorm in India.
Taking a sharp jab at the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi questioned why PM Modi hasn’t publicly refuted Trump’s bold claim. “If Donald Trump is lying, why can’t the Prime Minister of India openly call him out?” Rahul said.
He further added, “If the Indian Prime Minister says one thing and a former U.S. President claims the opposite, what are we supposed to make of Modi’s silence?”
At a recent public event, Donald Trump stated that during his presidency, he played a key role in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan, adding that PM Modi was present during the discussions. Trump even claimed that he issued a stern warning to Pakistan, making it clear that provocations would lead to serious consequences.
This declaration has raised eyebrows across India’s political landscape and sparked calls for clarification from the Indian government.
Speaking to the media, Rahul Gandhi said the Prime Minister’s silence on such a significant international statement was “deeply troubling.”
“Trump says he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan — and that too with PM Modi present. If that’s not true, why won’t our Prime Minister say so? This silence raises serious concerns about our sovereignty and national dignity,” Rahul said.
He further urged the Prime Minister to maintain transparency in matters of foreign policy, saying the people of India deserve clarity.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit back strongly, accusing Rahul Gandhi of misrepresenting facts for political gain. BJP leaders said Trump’s remarks were being twisted and politicized unnecessarily.
A BJP spokesperson said, “Rahul Gandhi is once again playing politics over national interest. He’s misquoting a past statement for headlines. India’s foreign policy under PM Modi has always been strong and independent.”
This isn’t the first time India’s foreign relations have become a point of domestic political contention. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised concerns about India’s diplomacy, including during international tours, leading the ruling party to accuse him of damaging the country’s image abroad.
Political experts warn that frequent public criticism of foreign policy decisions may hurt India’s global standing. However, opposition leaders argue that asking questions is vital to a functioning democracy.
Political analysts believe the government must respond clearly to Trump’s statement. If Trump’s claim is false, ignoring it could raise doubts about transparency in India’s diplomatic dealings — and potentially impact the PM’s credibility.
If, on the other hand, Trump’s claim is accurate and he did mediate a ceasefire with Modi present, the public deserves to know the full story.
Rahul Gandhi’s sharp statement isn’t just political theater — it opens the door to deeper discussions.
Should the Prime Minister clarify his role in foreign negotiations?
Is India’s foreign policy lacking transparency?
Are opposition voices asking legitimate questions, or simply stirring controversy?
The answers will unfold as political discourse continues. But one thing is clear: this issue isn’t dying down anytime soon. The heat is likely to rise in Parliament and across newsrooms — and it could also raise questions about India–U.S. diplomacy going forward.
