Rishabh Pant Injury Old Trafford Test – Scans Pending, Series Future Uncertain
India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant suffered a painful right foot injury on the opening day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, Pant inside-edged the delivery onto his right boot and was unable to continue his innings from 37 runs. He subsequently retired hurt, leaving the field on a medical cart and undergoing scans to assess the severity.
Pant was batting impressively at 37 off 48 balls, looking in touch when the incident occurred.
The impact swollen his right foot visibly, prompting immediate off-field medical attention.
England’s Chris Woakes had delivered a well-pitched ball, deflecting off Pant’s boot and injuring his ankle.
According to fellow batter Sai Sudharsan, Pant was in “a lot of pain,” and the swelling on his right foot seemed severe. Although early signs are worrying, the BCCI medical team is expected to make a full assessment after reviewing scan reports.
There are also concerns over Pant’s long-term availability, considering his history of injury, including a serious car accident last year and a recent finger issue. If he’s ruled out, backup wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel could be called in.
Former England captain Michael Atherton, speaking to Sky Sports, feared the worst: “You don’t get carted off if it’s not serious … If Pant is out of the series, that’s a massive blow to India.”
India’s batting position at stumps ended at 264/4, with RV Jadeja taking Pant’s spot.
Pant’s injury comes after earlier concerns regarding his finger injury at Lord’s, raising questions about his fitness on the tour.
As India’s second-highest run-scorer in the series—with 462 runs at an average of 77—his presence is vital for India’s chances in Manchester and possibly the rest of the series.
If fit, Pant could return as vice-captain and wicketkeeper. Otherwise, Dhruv Jurel is likely to step in as backup.
Rishabh Pant has been among the top performers in the series:
His consistent form has been instrumental in India staying competitive throughout the tour.
